From time to time, we meet people who radiate steadiness and quiet joy. We might imagine their serenity is beyond our reach, that we could never be like them. After all, we cling to small pleasures and old habits; we binge on sugar even when our parents died of diabetes and we chase the comfort of alcohol even when we know it brings no lasting relief.
Yet behind even the most productive lives, lies a question: What is the point of my life? Is there something beyond the endless sorting of material affairs? This question becomes even more acute when we lose something that we deeply care about. Even among those who “have it all,” loneliness, anxiety, and restlessness persist. We hope to avoid that fate, yet often resist the inner work that would guide us toward a more rewarding path. We tell ourselves there is time, pretending, absurdly, that we will never die. These are not new concerns. From kings to laborers, philosophers to homemakers, human beings have wrestled with these very questions since the dawn of time.
Today, our minds overflow with noise, our days replete with demands. Society insists we must know more, do more, and be more. We are persuaded by social media, celebrity culture, political players and commercial interests that tell us we are rarely enough, and rarely have enough. The net result: the more we chase, the emptier we feel.
It’s no wonder that more and more people turn to meditation. It works.
Meditation offers more than escape; it is a way of educating the self toward calm and clear sight. It helps us become the kind of person we admire, one who can walk through life, encountering the Mystery, centered in their core. Joy arises not from acquisition, but from simplicity and authenticity.
This state is not achieved overnight. Like all worthwhile endeavors, it takes discipline over time. Yet even early on in the practice, there are glimpses, moments of clarity that begin to improve the quality of our days. We may finally perceive that the pursuit of better bodies, better furniture, and better cars, may have a temporary impact on our mood, but it does not bring self-acceptance or happiness.
What if our children are brilliant but not kind?
What if our homes are modest but filled with laughter?
What if we don’t secure glittering prizes for ourselves?
What if we lose jobs, reputations? Will we still be lovable?
Who are we, really? Are we merely a reflection in others’ eyes, or something deeper, more enduring and connected?
There are many effective meditative paths, movement and sitting meditations, breath work, and mindfulness; Even the attentive practice of everyday tasks like cooking or painting, walking, athleticism can be very effective. Fortunately, there are techniques for every temperament.
For many, sitting cross-legged in silence feels impossible; the mind races, the back aches, boredom frightens. Yet there is another way.
The Power of Your Own Voice ~ The MediSounds® Practice
MediSounds is an active form of meditation using one’s own voice, distinct from passively listening to singing bowls, gongs or chants. Practiced daily, it centers and steadies you, helping you meet life with grace and balance. It can be directed to physical, emotional, and spiritual goals. It works quietly, transforming your relationship to your daily experience.
You don’t need perfect voices, only intention. Specific vocal tones vibrate our organs and energy centers, bringing calm and healing to body and mind. In short order, we feel a profound connection to a greater reality. The vibration continues to bring its non-verbal wisdom even after the vocalizing has stopped.
What we experience is not new, but something remembered.
Practice over time will enable the vibrations to reawaken and deepen an enduring awareness of connection, of ease, of love, of compassion, and instill in us a sense of being anchored in the greater reality.
Rooted in ancient wisdom teachings, these SoulSongs® rest on a simple truth: vibration is the foundation of creation itself. Beneath all words, opinions and conflicts runs a steady rhythm; we can align with this pulse of life, to sustain everything we do.
You need no special talent, only intention.
I invite you to take a few moments each day and step away from the incessant noise of the modern world and refresh your inner self with the MediSounds practice. Step away from those who profit by stirring your emotions, from advertisers and ideologues who feed on your desires and fears.
Gain mastery over yourself. Regain your peace.
In the coming Blog articles, I will share the MediSounds practices with you….come join me!
